Weather and other bits

So you were not actually wearing the coat?
I don’t wear a coat in the car, as it’s already warm in the car and it’s too bulky. I also take it (and my hat, scarf, and gloves) off as soon as I step inside the shop.

Unless it’s below 20F/-7C (real temp or windchill), I usually won’t wear it into the shops, I just leave it in the car, in case I get stranded - anyone should be able to endure that kind of temp for the minute or two it takes to get from the car to the doors.

Today, though, the wind was so strong, it actually hurt to be in it for more than a few seconds, so that’s why I was putting my coat on outside…until the wind had other ideas.

Yeah I've never understood wearing coats in modern cars. Even my 80 series landcruiser has warmed up enough too not need a coat by the time I reach tarmac. We won't mention the time it takes to reach a sealed road.

That, and wearing full winter gear in the shops. If a person is walking around a grocery store for 30 minutes or so, a place that’s 70/F/20C in their winter coat (not to mention their hat and scarf, as I’ve seen more often than not), how’re they going to feel when they step back out in the cold? They’ll need a coat to put over their coat! Madness!

I keep all my gear on until I get too hot and then I simply undo it or take it off. Then if I feel the temp dipping back down I put it back on 🤷‍♀️

Doesn’t matter where I am, car, supermarket or outdoors. Some peoples internal thermostats are not particularly responsive.
If I get cold I can’t warm back up without help from an external source so I don’t risk getting cold!
I always take a coat to put on in the supermarket, even in the summer, it’s cold in there.

Plans have been carried out.

I'm back in bed waiting for life to get warmer. It was 3.6° overnight and no heating.
No heating ??????? and you live near Canberra ??????? Jeeze, just the atmosphere of Canberra drifting in or by, let alone the actual temps, is enough to freeze the .... anyway, moving along .....

You had no heat because you have no heat or because you forgot to turn it on? I'm geussing the latter as it suppose to be summer in Oz at the moment :)

I think like SNSSO has no AC. The house is without.

Being a farm house in the southern part of NSW, there is a good chance it would not have AC BUT would have a heat source, possibly open fireplace or wood stove - which would be customary and common :)

You must have Eskimo blood somewhere in your past...
We just spent a week a little north of Wombat457, where the temps were around 35F/2C for the high and about 27F/-3C for the low (not counting windchills).

Our host kept his house thermostat on 62F//16C…and had either the back door or the door to the garage open (as well as the garage) so the dog could get in and out, so there were times when either the foyer or the back room were closer to 50F/10C than they were to 60F/15C, and everyone was constantly pizzing and moaning that the house was freezing…except me. I thought it was perfect.

I was barefoot, sleeves rolled, walking across the tiled floors, the hardwood floors, no problem. Right now, as cold as it is out, our house is 68F/19C…and I’m wearing nothing but a t-shirt!

Whelp - there goes my appetite 🙄 :D

When I first got over here it was winter so it was cold - obviously, and I dressed accordingly; HOWEVER, by the time the so called summer turned up (according to the calender and the locals) I was still wearing flannel shirts, sweat shirts and thermals. Meanwhile, all of these new yorkers were walking around in T Shirts and shorts. They thought I was nuts and I thought they were as well :)

The house has no aircon, period and 1 wood-burning stove in the sitting room. It is very typical of this area, especially in rural areas. Most older houses are the same. This is a 1960's house buit by the farmer who lived here (I have met the woman who grew up here - her father built the house and her and her mother had to fight just to get an indoor toilet.)

It is very unusual to light the stove after November. Typically we just cope. But that said, even when it is lit, the far end of the house does not get warm (think bedroom and bathroom), so you get used to it. You wear layers. The house also has no insulation and single glazing only.

That is pretty much as I imagined it ... and yeah, having to have heat after October even would be out of the norm I would think.
yep - after should have read in.

If you think back to Black Summer, we were already on fire then. At the weekend, I drove passed one of my neighbours houses and they had the stove lit. it was 11C at the time.
