Eel in green herb sauce & fries
Interesting! One of the iconic dishes in the east of London is pie, eel and mash, drowned in "liquor" - which is made with the stock from the eel and piles of parsley.
Back a long time ago, eels were common in theThames, but when the river became polluted, the eels were brought over from Holland on barges.

Part of this region is called the ' thems ' and these used to be coastal cities until the sea retreated. In the Middle ages, Damme was a coastal trading hub so possibly there was some interaction going on between the then Dutch ( Belgium and the Netherlands seperated much later) and the British.

Ate yesterday within the Arabic food enclave of Edgware Road, London - a shawarma (I guess it's a rolled-up kebab) at acclaimed restaurant Abu Afif.

After you pay, you are sent with your ticket with your order to the guy, who takes it and carves the meat then asks you what veg you want. Natch I have everything; chilies, cabbage, lettuce, tomato, the lot.

View down the 'bar' with all kinds of savoury pastries:

Outer view. I know they say 'size doesn't matter' but when it comes to kebabs, it absolutely does. This monster was about 10" in length.

Mid bite, tsk- bit out of focus, but every mouthful was perfectly balanced. I could have eaten another one. Cost: £8.
