Part of this region is called the ' thems ' and these used to be coastal cities until the sea retreated. In the Middle ages, Damme was a coastal trading hub so possibly there was some interaction going on between the then Dutch ( Belgium and the Netherlands seperated much later) and the British.Interesting!
