What did you cook or eat today: August 2025?

I made babi ketjap (babi kecap).
I was going to do a seperate dish with mainly green bell peppers.
But I decided to be lazy and just threw them in the pot.
So I suppose I made babi ketjap dan paprika hijau :)
Annyway, much more tasty than expected.
Wish I had taken note of the amounts. Ingredients: pork, onion, ginger, fresh chili, garlic, soy & treacle (as replacement for ketjap manis) and tamarind juice. And of course green bell peppers
I already want to eat it!

What are they?
Yea, they're my version of Spanakopita. Literally every place I've tried them, they have been mediocre at best, and some just gross. I have never seen any restaurant NOT do the pie version. (yuck) so, I thought, if you can make them better than you can buy them, do it..... So I did. They are delicious and I love the triangle version much more because there is more phillo dough and it's buttery and flakey and awesome.

Moussaka. I fancied something Greek , since we'd eaten some dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) I'd made a few months ago, and froze them. (Freezing them doesn't affect the flavour, or the texture, I'm happy to say.
Found some decent feta cheese, so that went into a Greek salad.

I've never seen the "pie" version. I used to work at a Greek restaurant when I was in college (I went from there to the Italian restaurant later) and the spanakopita and baklava were amazing.

We grill at all temperatures...
Summer & winter, maybe a slight break in the rainy season
Mostly on charcoal though
The weather is pretty mild today (82F/28C). I wouldn't mind grilling something, but the Weber grill I bought my DH for his birthday in mid-April is still sitting in the box in the garage :headshake:

Even when we had an operational grill, we didn't grill much in the winter. It gets very windy and cold and it's hard to keep a consistent temperature, so a steak might be medium well on one area and rare on another.

I first ate them in Greece in 1978. You'd go into the store and ask for some spanakopita and they'd cut you a square of the stuff. I seem to remember that was a lifesaver, because I bought 3 or 4 squares for the (coach) trip back to the UK.
Yes, a 3-day coach trip is quite another story!!

They look wonderful! Care to share your recipe?

I agree. The restaurant or frozen aren't very good. Usually bland. I used to make what I call mini spinach pies. Until the arthritis got bad.

My recipe filling (I add lemon juice, grated Italian hard cheese, onion, feta, butter, and hot sauce) is very flavorful. The crust/phillo dough is buttery and crispy. (I don't use sesame seeds) I also add lemon juice and hot sauce to the brushing butter.

Now I use the same filling (and lots of butter, LOL) but make it in the square shape Spanakopita.

I seem to recall the last time I made spanakopita, I used leeks instead of onion and ( Horror!) Swiss chard instead of spinach.
I'm going to duck from the throwing of plates by saying that I think Swiss chard would basically taste the same! And I actually like leeks better than most onions.
