What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2025)?

I just made a beer run, so stopped at the local grocery store for some Brussels Sprouts on the way. Beer isn't sold in my state's grocery stores unless you are a large chain with a special permit.

I had a hard time finding somewhat normal sized ones. Some packages had a few in it that were as big as limes. But I haven't had any sprouts in a while, so dug around until I came up with a decent package. Looking forward to them. Even though I don't typically serve them with either of tonight's dinner plans.
Sometimes I'll boil them, smash kind of flat, bread and then fry.

Aldi and Kroger (and an orchard stop for apple cider):

Cheddar was 2-for-1, sherbet was free, and MrsT has been in a hot sweat since she saw the ad for those reuben bites last week.

The baker’s sugar I actually bought to use as bar sugar (superfine sugar), but they quit selling the sensible 16oz superfine sugar and started carrying this 478 pound container of “baker’s sugar,” though. I can’t believe they expect people to fall for chicanery like tha— oh, waitaminute…! 🤨

Wine will get orange-and-coriander seed-infused for next weekend.

I love sprouts. Don’t have them often enough.

I don’t know why I keep getting tricked into buying Boston lettuce. By the time I pull off on the damaged leaves, I’m left with about three to use.

I had to check your ‘Boston Lettuce’ is the same as the lettuce I grew up with (that I knew as English lettuce but apparently is ‘English Butterhead lettuce’) and yes tis the same thing.
I totally agree so much unusable leaf and quite a dry, irony, hopefully slightly sweet tasting leaf and yet in-spite of this I persisted in buying it 😂
Nowadays here you’d be hard pushed to find it anywhere. Maybe some in a mixed bag of loose leaves labelled non-specifically as ‘summer leaves’

My mum was fond of serving it (bad leaves and all) dry with no dressing at all with cheap plastic ham rolled. Sometimes there might have been salad cream or mayo (rarely) but mostly we were served sliced tomatoes, cucumber and dark iron flavoured leaves all separately on the plate with no dressing. Still have the horrors about that 😂
I always thought we were being punished when that appeared 😬

Hmm come to think of it maybe that’s why I dislike salad 😆

Yep, we also call it butter lettuce and Bibb lettuce.

It’s frequently used here as a garnish for plating something like a chicken salad, used in lettuce wraps because it’s very pliable, and in restaurants, it’s quite a soft, mild lettuce…but the heads at the store are horrible.

It’s sad, because it’s MrsT’s favorite lettuce, but I can rarely find a good example of it for sale.
