• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

Rye, in Sussex. A delightful town near the coast (it used to be on the coast, but the sea receded!) full of cobbled streets, ancient pubs, a house with two front doors and Marino's Fish Bar, where I had the best fish and chips ever. Wonderful crispy batter, perfect fish and proper chips which did not go soggy.We asked the cook, and he said they were twice fried.

Been there and eaten that. Its a lovely town. Also known for the scallop festival Rye Bay Scallop Week
 
S for Scuol, in SE Switzerland, and San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico.
Scuol is a small mediaeval village at the foot of the Alps. Only 7 miles from Italy - but you have to cross the Alps first.:hyper: We ate very well, including a meal in the castle, but the one thing I remember was the Appenzeler cheese. Just utterly unbelievable. By the way, in Scuol, they speak Reto-Romansch.:)
San Miguel de Allende is a small town about 3 hours from Mexico city to the north. We ate one spectacular meal in a rooftop restaurant called "Quince". Here are some of the dishes:

Too many S in California alone, so I picked
S for San Francisco
When we were in the Bay area we went to SF every weekend. This is a food town.
We remember a lot of nice memories from SF even before we were married, like the cable car, the flower stalls, etc..
But I have not been back here since my last child moved away from SF, so who knows, things might have changed.
 
🎶 T for Texas, T for Tennessee… 🎶

Texas - not a good, but my favorite roadside shack of a lunch place, so rickety the whole place trembled when opening the screen door, with the no-frills name of The Squat & Gobble.

Tennessee - MrsT took me there to try the legendary dry rub ribs at Rendezvous BBQ…total tourist trap. Seated at a table about the size of a single placemat, and it was so crowded and noisy…one standing “gentleman” continually backed into our table until his butt cheeks squished into our plates.

After five reminders from us, and two reminders from waitstaff to, you know, keep your azz out of my food please, I’d had enough and finally drove my elbow as hard as I possibly could into his lower back, sending him straight to the floor.

Ribs were horrible, BTW.

T for USA is Tahoe
This used to be our favorite place to go skiing in the winter. In the summer the water at the lake is very clean. Food here is excellent because of all the casinos, but memorable place is Heidi’s pancake place. Sadly when we came back after we retired everything seems to deteriorate including the pancake place.
