Gut health & 30 plant points a week

I decided to look back at the past week and see what what was eaten. I thought I wouldn't make 30 not counting herbs and spices, but was actually pretty surprised

In no particular order, as remembered or noted, I listed in groups of 5 for easy counting, each item listed only once, followed by herbs and spices. Like SatNavSaysStraightOn I eat a lot of cilantro for e.g. so counted things like that as a whole point - as far as I'm concerned eating upwards of 100g counts as a veg. Ditto limes and lemons which are eaten whole in Indian pickles for e.g.

I counted 48 items plus a lot of herbs and spices. Surprised myself. 🌱

My list:

pinto beans
navy beans
carrots
arugula/rocket
cabbage red

cabbage green
beetroot
sweet potato
pears
avocado

bananas
dried chestnut mushrooms
cilantro
pumpkin leaves
oranges

grapefruit
chickpeas
seville oranges
lemons
celery

red onion
white onion
green onions
pistachios
cranberries

green peppers
green chile (as a veg)
red chile dried (as a veg)
blue wholegrain cornmeal
white wholegrain cornmeal

peanuts
leeks
potatoes
wholewheat flour
limes (whole fruit in Indian pickles)

porcini dried
cucumber
tomatoes
tomatillos
kale

chestnut mushrooms
chickpea flour
raisins
green onions
sesame seeds

almonds
tofu
yellow corn

garlic
herbs
black pepper
turmeric
cumin
cinnamon
ginger
nutmeg
fenugreek
annatto
black beans (chinese)
star anise
fennel seed
mustard seeds yellow
mustard seeds brown

Pretty interesting exercise

If I eat 1 apple a day (keeps the doctor away), I get as many points as 1 in a week....
If you eat a red apple, it's 1, eat a green apple is 1. Some countries, i know not yours, now also have red fleshed apples. It's variety that is the key.

So red carrots, orange carrots, purple carrots, yellow, white are all 1 pt each.

I'm feeling challenged as growing up we never ate the variety as presented in this thread but with a plan and a Kroger...

Not sure it's about upbringing as just having a lot of bit and bobs around the place to snack on/cook with/add in/try out. Omnivore pattern eating 😅

I bet you have a lot more or eat a lot more variety than you think you do Barriehie 🙂

Upbringing = habit. I'll see about the variety now that I can write it down and don't have to remember, which I usually don't... 🤫

Try jotting down every plant derived thing you ate in the last week, as you you remember them. That's all I did - you'll surprise yourself.🙂

Blank to do lists are often not helpful IMO. Better to just get into mixing it up in the kitchen and pantry and shopping cart 😅

Starting Sunday I'll be writing. That's not a blank to do list, it's a form to be completed... 😉
