Parts of Louisiana have muffalettas, which are sometimes pressed and toasted but not always.

I can eat the olive salad part right out of the jar!!!

I've not tried a Cubano, but I can see that in the near future - just never thought about it before, thanks PAcanis

When I've made them, I did them on the grill with a brick wrapped in foil to press them down
But of course that would work great. And for paninis, too

I make a dish that looks alot like this, but add in some cooked pasta, maybe Cheese Tortellini that's it in a nut shell.

Supper this evening

K-girl's Kitchen Steak Sandwich
leftover grilled Strip Steak, sliced as thinly as I could across the grain
warmed back up in a skillet with sautéed Sweet Bell Peppers, Onions, Mushroom and a kiss of Garlic and melty Sharp Provolone Cheese
piled high on sliced Italian Bread that has been lightly toasted and drizzled with Olive Oil
AH YUM!!!
I'll be making this again!

Ya know...some olive tapenade might be an interesting addition to that. Just sayin'.

A long time ago, I picked up an Emeril Lagasse recipe for muffaletta . It involved a large, round Sicilian loaf,sliced horizontally in half, with an olive/celery/red onion stuffing on the bottom, then layers of salami, provolone, Parma ham, mozzarella, mortadella, pecorino, coppa.. then more olive salad on the top. The instructions were to put the "lid' on top, wrap it in foil, then put something heavy on top and leave it for an hour or so. Cut into triangles and enjoy.
I just had a look at the traditional Sicilian muffalata/muffaletta/moffalata and, suprise, surprise - it's not about the filling, it's about the bread. It's a special bread roll, covered with sesame seeds, and typically eaten on 2nd November, just after the day of the dead. Filling might be olives, anchovies and tomatoes.
Interesting how things morph from one continent to another.
