Squash vs squash & Courgette vs Marrow

That's apparently true, and I had no idea.
I can remember a rather posh friend invited me to lunch and his mum had made "buttered marrow".
Erm, well, yes... the butter probably tasted good:laugh:
Ahh, but buttered baby marrow would be delicious! I do love summer squashes. It's the hard, sweet ones I can't abide.

It wasn't great then. It's not great now.

Our mother's inability with food had affected all 4 of us in similar ways. None of us can hold a constant bodyweight for long. I've had to teach my sister about nutrition and such. My youngest brother learnt that as a chef but it is very meat and dairy industry dominated. My other brother is only really learning now, after his stroke.
It’s amazing just how much your childhood experiences of food effect later life.

I have to say something in defence of squash (the stuff we drink) because it’s often viewed with a bit of distain but there’s a lot to be said for the original squashes that were just concentrated fruit and syrup. Nowadays they separate themselves from squash by being called cordial and there are some really good cordials out there.

Most adults I know have a bottle of elderflower cordial somewhere.

A lot of people don’t enjoy drinking plain water and just a little flavour in the form of a wee glug of squash means the ‘water’ would be chugged down fairly quickly.

It fell out of favour here for being bad for your teeth. I think thats why we only had it when we were ill!

Ribena for example was water sugar and concentrated blackcurrant with very minimal preservatives. It’s ruined now by the UK’s sugar tax. They (along with most other manufacturers) use at least part sweetener now so they can get under the sugar tax threshold.

And unfortunately, I can taste it when they use artifical sweetener. I do not like it at all!
Me too. Can’t stand the stuff. Many of our drinks are ruined with sweetener now 😞
I think sweeteners was the reason gin and tonic was out of favour for so long. As soon as real tonic appeared gin sales soared.

On the marrow front I can remember having stuffed marrow once and it was good, thanks for the reminder!

We would half them lengthwise, scoop out the flesh, then fill with ground beef, marrow flesh, tomato and lots of spices and bake in the oven.
Yes! Apart from one very underwhelming buttered marrow experience, that's how I remember marrow - stuffed and baked.
