Welcome to The Cookbook Game #6 10/16/19

What is the game all about and how do we play it?

The game is all about your cookbooks. If you are like me, you have cookbooks that have just been sitting on the shelves and haven't been opened in years. What a waste. This game is designed to change that.

First, count how many cookbooks you have. For each game, I will pick a number and that will be the cookbook you will be using for that game. If you don't have that # of cookbooks, count over till you reach that number. Or, if you wish, continue to count from where you left off the last time you played. Then post what cookbook you will be using and tell us something about that book, if you want to. Then pick a recipe to make. The recipe should be one you haven't made before. Post the recipe in full as a new thread, tag it the cookbook game #6 and place a link back to it in this thread. Please include the title of the cookbook and the date of publication.

If, in the course of making the recipe, you find you need to make minor adjustments to get it to work (for example, increasing the cooking time to ensure the dish is properly cooked through, for health and safety reasons) then please explain what you did and why, in the recipe review. Otherwise, please make the recipe as written.

Cookbook # 68

S for me is either Nigel Slater or Rick Stein - both are pretty fail safe I think. They seem to be the only two amongst 150 plus books. I'm surprised there aren't more S recipe books...

Now I start counting to 68.

Just ONE of my S books by Jeff Smith (The Frugal Gourmet) is "The Frugal Gourmet Cooks with Wine" pub. 1986. DH just marked 5 recipes he would like to make. Wait till he sees all of the books eligible for Game #6. lol

MG, I don't know about you, but my #68 is one shy of running into the S books. It's "The Big Book of Backyard Cooking" by Betty Rosbottom, pub. 2004. More about it if it is chosen.

Are you saying you have only one S books?

My 68 is a book of sauces - that will be very versatile.
No lol

I have 10 books by Jeff Smith
5 by Chris Schlesinger
2 by Dinah Shore
1 by Art Smith
1 by A. Cort Sinnes
1 by Dr. Lee Su Jan ?
and 1 by Southern Living ? lol

More choice than me then. But I'm Ok with my two S's (more than two books as I have more than one recipe book from both authors)

I always wait till after I start a game to see what I have. I even had DH pick the number cookbook for me this morning. I like to be surprised. Can't wait till I get ALL my cookbooks out here so I know what the heck I have. lol

I am not familiar with Jeff Smith. And you have TEN of his books!
Maybe you know him as The Frugal Gourmet. He had a cooking show for many, many years here in the US. Are you old enough to know who Dinah Shore was? lol

Okay, Frugal Gourmet (along with Galloping Gourmet) I remember. Don't have a great retention of names behind them!

Yes, I do remember Dinah Shore. I'm actually 65... grin.

I do have a number of choices here.

Number 68: American Cooking: Creole and Acadian: Foods of the World by Time Life Books (1971). So I might be picking something retro here...

S books:

Michael and Jane Stern
Suvir Saran (2 books)
Hiroko Shimbo
Mark Sisson
Amelia Simmons (truly retro... Colonial retro...)
Barbara Swell
Walter Staib
Hank Shaw (2 books)

Have yet to decide.

How come I have nearly 200 recipe books and only two authors with names beginning with S?

Also - I've never heard of any of the authors mentioned so far! Perhaps it goes to show how separate are cooking cultures are.

Well, I do have well over 100 books - counted them on a different thread, so can't recall the exact number.

I do a lot of books with authors specializing in Asian cuisine (Saran and Shimbo). I went to a workshop on cooking Indian food with Saran about seven years ago.

The Sterns traverse (or did, I don't know if they are still healthy enough, or even around) across the US and hit small, non-important dining establishments, and copy recipes to put in their books.

The Swell and Simmons books are more pamphlets than real books (but Swell is definitely historical-retro).

.Sisson is pretty much involved in the Paleo food movement. I have his sauce and condiment book.

Hank Shaw is a forager and hunter, and has a pretty intensive website. .
