• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

I thought I posted this yesterday, but better late than never. I wanted to share a new favorite tradition of mine:

Going out to dinner on Halloween

Like most people with adult children, I haven’t had much interest in the holiday in a while. Every year, I would feel obligated to buy hundreds of dollars worth of candy to hand out to the children ringing my doorbell.

There was a friend that we hadn’t seen in a while, and we kept having to reschedule when we were hoping to meet. We all miraculously had time available Friday, so we figured this was as a good time as any. We normally go out to eat around 3 PM, because restaurants usually aren’t crowded then. It took longer than expected to get ready, and we ended up going out to eat about 5 PM. This is around the time when the doorbell would start ringing.

Our neighborhood is the kind that parents bring their kids to from other neighborhoods. If genuinely difficult to even drive your car through the neighborhood when the trick or treating is in full swing. But, by the time we got home, it was nice and calm.

I’m looking forward to a nice dinner next October 31.

You did. Your post is here. The whole post was also copied to 'What did you eat or cook today' because it was food and photos of the food. See here.

Definitely a wise move to go out on Halloween. Thankfully its not an issue here at all. A few kids passing by but no knocking on the door.

I was also a bit flabbergasted a couple weekends ago on the way to the girls’ weekend we had. My bestie and I (we drove up together) stopped at the liquor store to buy supplies. Gathered what we wanted, headed up to the cash. The woman there asked me for my ID!

I told her I would be positively THRILLED to show her my ID! The legal drinking age here is 19, their official stance is they ask for ID for anyone who looks under 25. I’m 42.

I remember when my DD went to vote. After Hurricane Sandy hit, our town was wiped out. We needed to go to a different polling place to vote. She was 24, but the person asked her for ID before she voted. The person looked at it and said he was sorry, but she looked 13 to him. LOL, DD felt good about that.

Our drinking age in the Netherlands was 16, so I was very surprised to be asked for my ID in New Zealand at age 23 or 24 :)
It was new years eve. We had walked from the campsite and left our ID's safely in the car. So we turned around at the door of the pub, ran to the campsite, jumped in the car and made it in at the countdown.
Had a beer in my hand with 2 seconds to go

16!! WOW

My husband and I got curious a while ago and started looking up the legal drinking ages for different countries. Many countries have different legal drinking ages for beer & wine vs. spirits, which I thought was a really good idea.
