There are 3 ways to add pictures to a post.
  1. The first and most obvious option is the "Attach Files" button. It is also the easiest option.
  2. The second option is to use the media gallery on this site.
  3. The final option is to embed or link to a picture on another site.

Option 1 - Attach Files
The "Attach files" button is single-use. That means the file(s) you upload to your post can only be displayed in that post and nowhere else. If you want to display the same image in a second thread, you will need to upload it again (which we do not recommend).

The system does not recognise that the image is the same, so uploading it twice doubles the disk space used. For this reason, resolution (pixels) and file sizes (MB) are smaller when uploading directly to a post than when using the Media Gallery.

The current restrictions are 1,200×1,024 pixels and 6Mb per file. There is also a 6-attachment limit per post. If you want larger images or more images in your post, you'll need to use the media gallery.

1. Click the button " Attach files" and follow the steps specific to your device.

2. You'll see the image(s) uploading. Wait until the green bar disappears and is replaced by the word "Insert..."

3. You need to tell the system how and where to display the image in your post. You have two options: thumbnail or full image.

4a. If you have one image, on the thumbnail of your photo click "Insert...". "Insert" will now change to "Thumbnail" and "Full Image". Click the one you want, and the image will be inserted at your cursor's last position.

4b. If you uploaded more than one image, you'll see an "Insert multiple ..." button. If you click on it, you can tick the photos you want adding in one go. Next, select the size, and they will all turn up in the order they were shown. If you require a different order, you will need to select images one at a time (4a) and insert them manually.

Finally, if you forget to add an attachment, it will automatically be added as a thumbnail to the end of your post.

Option 2 - Media Gallery
The beauty of the media gallery is that the system is designed to allow a single image to be displayed multiple times across the entire site, whilst only storing a single copy of the image, and you can add 19 links to each post, so up to 19 images can be displayed in 1 post.

It also allows images to be commented on, rated, and tagged, and makes all EXIF data easily accessible. Because only a single image is stored on the site, the resolution (pixels) and file size (Mb) restrictions are more lenient: 1,600×1,200 pixels and 10 MB per media gallery image.

The downside is that you must add an image to a media album before trying to add it to a post. See here for instructions: How to create a media album and How to add images to an existing album.

Adding a media gallery image to your post.
Find the camera icon in the toolbar above the text box when you're writing your post.

On wide screens, it is immediately visible,

More often, it is on the second toolbar that drops down when you click one of the more buttons (the triple dot).

From there, it should be obvious.

Tip: You will not immediately see the image(s) in your post until after you click on the Save button. Instead, you'll see the image's code.

Code:
[GALLERY=media, 9200][/GALLERY]

After you click Save, the image will display like this (above) instead of like the one below.

The Media Gallery also allows you to link to entire Media Albums, as well as to other members' images added to the Media Gallery (automatically indicating which member's photo it is).

Option 3 - Embed a link to a picture on an external site
The idea is similar in concept to the media gallery. You are giving a link to a picture on another site and saying display that image here. It's the picture icon.

After you have pasted a link into the http:// field and clicked Insert, depending on your internet connection speed, there maybe a delay until the image shows. Just wait!

So what's the catch?
  • Well first the image is restricted to 1200×1,024 pixels. If it is too large the system will automatically try to resize it, but it won't be able to all of the time.
  • You are still restricted to a total of 6 images per post (that's a combined total between Attach Files and Embed link, but not the Media Gallery)
  • You can only do 1 link at a time.
  • And not all images can be linked to because some sites prevent it.
