Tinned fish products

Nothing Portuguese around your area? The Portuguese would have us believe they live on sardines!
When I was in Madeira I went to a lovely little cafe on the coast. On the menu was sardine sandwich. I imagined something fresh from the see and sofisticated so ordered it. Nope, the barman opened a tin of sardines in tomato sauce and slapped them between two slices of white processed bread.

My life what a tasty butty that was. By coincidence I was looking at an online Spanish food shop earlier today (sobrasada and blood sausage were my targets) and I came acrosss tinned sardines. I will be buying in the new year.

Have to say I recently bought a tin of sardines; something I don't ever recall having bought before. I used them to make a "montadito" - basically, a Spanish version of a bruschetta.
Wow - I can't believe I've never tried them before. Really great!
What did you do? Just put them on bread or did you do anything else to the sardines?

I was really surprised by this as they are both an old school staple and a gourmet delight in the UK.

So based on karadekoolaid post, I also grabbed a tin of sardines.
Then I had to go search for my tin/can opener and realised I hadn't used that one for a long long time.
Gave it a rinse and opened the tin.

Yep. "montar" in Spanish is "to mount" , so a montadito is something simple, mounted on a piece of bread.
I had some sourdough bread, so I splashed it with olive oil and grilled it. On went a sardine, some wild tomatoes, some capers, and a sprinkle og homemade garlic breadcrumbs.

Sardine sandwiches were a staple for tea when I played cricket on Bearsted Green back in the 70s
The fish was usually mashed with malt vinegar. Maybe a tomato or two as well, but mostly, just mashed.
Then, for some reason or another, they went out of fashion here.
