Tinned fish products

Yesterday was perhaps the first time EVER that I've opened a can or flat tin of food that was bad past the "best buy" date (and only by 6 months). I was making Caesar dressing and popped a can of Oscar sardines that exploded on me (a sign), and then the stench hit me. "Whoa, no way!", I thought, and pitched them. So, I opened another can of Oscar's with same date and was hit with the same stench. "Uh-uh." That was all of the Oscar's I had, so I opened a can of Cento's. Finally, they were fresh, and are what I used in my Caesar dressing. I was shocked, though, that two cans just 6 months past the "best buy" date would be bad. I've eaten countless canned goods that have been perfectly fine many YEARS past their best buy date.

Sounds like when plopped a farm fresh egg into the pan and a rotted black blob fell into the hot oil. It took awhile to air out the house...
