Probably because it would soften the seed.I've heard adding a few drops of peroxide helps. Read that on a gardening forum but can't remember why.
I soaked them, they go in today. We'll see

Good bug. I'm probably going to use a piece of bamboo. It's plentiful and free.Mine got old fibre glass tent poles to keep them up.

A piece of bamboo fell over and pretty much split my cayenne plant in two. 
I ordered 2 more from Lowes and they had them here in right about exactly 48 hours!

Got both new cayenne plants housed.
My split cayenne never did show any signs of distress so it's got a bamboo support.
Bell pepper getting some help too.

Compostable shade for one of my acorn squash. It's the most productive but not handling the sun well.
Gathered up my raked piles of maple leaves and grass clippings from bush hogging to make another mulch/compost pile.
The grass is full of seeds so I have to keep the pile turned so they rot and that also disuades the ants. Once I get some kitchen scraps on there that Ozzie won't eat the black soldier flies will find it and composting goes to overdrive...

I don't think the newly shaded acorn squash plant is going to make it. I'll pull it out and put one of my new yellow squash seedlings there.

Green peppers are still green and I am forcing myself to wait till I got at least a couple of red or yellow ones
Still eating masau and pawpaw straight of the tree.
Also got the odd aubergine and yard ong bean.
The beans are starting to grow a bit better now and I've put some structures in place for them to climb.
Cucumber plants are very very small. Days will be lengthening so hopefully they take off.

Do you water anything from the river or just let it all go?

Everything would be dead if I didn't water it.
We normally have no rain between mid March and end November.
And even then only around 400 mm for the rainy season
