• I’ve added a casual chat room to CookingBites as a place for off-topic banter, light conversation, and short-lived chit-chat that doesn’t belong in forum threads. The chat room is informal and lightly-to-not moderated, with messages being temporary, so it’s ideal for friendly back-and-forth that would otherwise derail discussions. Site rules still apply, but there’s no reporting system or expectation of post-by-post moderation - if something becomes uncomfortable, the right response is to step away. If a topic has substance or lasting value, it still belongs in the forums; everything else can head to chat.

What did you cook or eat today? (January 2026)

MrsT made a turkey meatloaf from scratch, and we had some pre-made mashed potatoes. This is my first “heavy” meal in about 10 days, so I was really looking forward to it.

Now, it was turkey meatloaf, so it wasn’t as…complex as our usual beef-pork-veal, but it was still quite tasty. I was not disappointed at all, and I’m very much thinking about leftovers tomorrow.

Many of you may be wondering how MrsT is taking to cooking, whether she’s finding it’s not as bad as she thought…well, all through dicing onions and beating eggs and all that, I could hear her swearing under her breath. We were also supposed to have glazed carrots, quite simple to make, but once she slapped the meatloaf into the oven, she stomped into the living room, collapsed into her recliner, then looked at me and said, “I hope you’re still not expecting those goddam carrots!”

Life wasn't easy over the last 6+ months, for a variety of reasons:
Wow. That's a terrible 6 months to have to go through. You have my sympathy. Let's hope it's all over now and you can get back to normal.
Great to have you back - and lovely soup, by the way!

Dammed as Lady nightgown

Well that's meant to say "same as last night" but predictive text is playing up!

Gazpacho and that giant chickpea burger!
:whistling:

Had linguine and homemade meatballs and tomato sauce.
Side Note: I bought fresh basil, oregano, and parsley. Washed and dried them. Then put in the mini food processor and chopped them coarsely. Placed in a zip top bag and then into freezer. I now have chopped herbs, garlic, and onions in the freezer ready to go whenever I need them. Saves my fingers/hands a bit of pain.
I also have home seasoned bread crumbs (includes herbs, spices, and grated Italian cheese) ready to go in the freezer.

I do that, just never thought of onions....

No krupuk or emping today?
Krupuk bawang or do you still eat prawns

(The "standard" krupuk is krupuk udang, made of shrimp, krupuk bawang is made of onions. Emping is made from the melindjo nut)
None pictured, but yes we had some vegetarian krupuk ☺️ ( there's a substitute version available these days)

I'm glad I read this...I've always called them shrimp crackers, and never thought of making them before. But, here's what looks like a good recipe:

Kerupuk, Krupuk, Kroepoek (Shrimp Crackers)
