What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2025)?

I’m putting this here since it involves purchasing groceries.

I live and die by Kroger’s shopping app. My main list is there, my digital coupons, and unlike most things in life, it works seamlessly between functions and is actually pleasant to use.

Until now. They’ve redesigned it, and I swear, it’s as if they’ve purposely set out to make things next to impossible to do.

Used to, open the app, and along the top was the store location your app was set to. Want to change that manually? One click, put in the ZIP or city, click to set it to that. That set your app to that store’s location. Easy.

Along the bottom icons, far left, there’s your list, with a little number showing how many items are on it. One click, your list is up, with a handy search bar along the top. Want to add carrots to your list? Type in carrots, up pops all the carrot options, choose what you want, and you’re back in your list and the carrots are there. Easy.

Now…want to change your store? Well, do you? Because nothing shows what store location you’re set to. You’re untethered. Or maybe not. Who knows?

Want to pick a store? Ok, click the menu up top…scroll scroll scroll…ah, store locations…click…a list of stores in your area shows up…click the one you want…it shows location, phone, departments and amenities…but is there any way to set the app to use that store for your shopping? Nope! You’re outta luck.

Oh well, let’s just move on to the list. Ok, where’s my list? It used to be one click away, right on the bottom. Nope. Now it’s buried in that menu, three clicks to get there…and if I want to add an item to my list…wait, the search bar is gone! I have to back all the way out of my list, back to the home page, use the search bar there, find my item, click save to list, then three clicks back to my list…for every damn item I want to add. Seriously, pen and paper is faster.

But the real award winner for F***Up of the Year goes to the brilliant jackass who got their hands all over the Coupons area. Used to, I’d go to Coupons, scroll through, and if I saw one I wanted, I’d checkmark it (“clipping” it), and from right there, I could Shop All Items, and it would show me anything that coupon was good for, and from right there inside the coupon, I could add an item to my list. Click. Cheerios is on my list. Hide All Items, continue scrolling through coupons. That’s what I meant by it being seamless - I could add things to my list from Coupons…I could clip coupons from within my list…I could search from within my list.

No more. Get this, if I see an item in Coupons, I have to clip the coupon, no problem, then back entirely out of Coupons, go to the home page, search for that item, then add it to my list, then back to the home page, then into Coupons, which puts me back at the top of the coupons list, scroll back down, scroll scroll scroll, to the next item I want, clip it, exit all the way back to the home page, search, save it, back to the home page, back to Coupons, over and over again. It’s maddening!

They’ve also buried their Kroger Pay feature (like ApplePay, but proprietary to Kroger). Used to be, when it came time to pay, there was a big icon right on the home page, click it, and that was that. Now it’s also buried three clicks deep under their main menu.

I’ve already complained. I hope they get this crap fixed because right now, it’s barely usable.

They don't care. It's some app engineer qualifying his/her job. It's the same with my bank. They've finally 'upgraded' the app to the point of dysfunctional. I kept the bank account, it's free, but changed to an online banking institution that has an app that works flawlessly as advertised.

Having worked corporate IT in just about every facet in just about every industry, I know that rarely are these redesigns done to improve anything - study after study after study shows that if a customer base doesn’t see a redesign every couple of years, they perceive the company as being old and behind with the latest and greatest. We’re our own worst enemy in that respect.

I’ve been through redesigns where all we did was move the button for FunctionA from the top-right to slightly down the page, closer to middle-right, and then move this over there…and that up there…and make everything a different font, and then advertise our New & Improved Widget, redesigned with the customer in mind - absolutely zero in new or better functionality, purely cosmetic, but if we didn’t do that, then we’d get complaints saying, “I also use your competitor’s app and they just upgraded theirs. How come yours has been the same for the last two years? Get with the times!”

I just got back from the local store and saw they had butter on sale. My favorite brand, too.
So I bought 8lbs.
I'll buy more next time I am in there for the freezer downstairs.

Well they do say, 'everything's better with butter'. So you can now feel very well indeed.

Dang! I should have buttered my baloney sandwich!

The last time I really stocked up on butter, for like $2.50 a lb, the next time I went to purchase it it was around $5.00/lb.
The cons of stocking up on things.

Now I was happy to pay $5.00/lb on sale.

I feel your pain.
I used to shop online at Waitrose. Was with them from their very first online shopping site. It wasn't great but it improved in small increments until it was good.
All of the first grocery sites were a bit crap but in-spite of Waitrose fuddyduddy old school approach they slowly improved and the site was relatively easy to use.

Then the Waitrose delivery guy announced they were getting a BRAND NEW WEBSITE next week.
I replied “Oh dear” because it’s just not something they showed any understanding of.
He looked at the floor and quietly said Hmm yes.

It was so bad I stopped shopping with them and switched to Ocado and from there branched out to using all of them apart from Waitrose.
I now shop with every other supermarket more often because they never picked back up 😞
That was over 10 years ago.
Shame because their ingredients and produce is right up there.

The Fallow of London restaurant guys on Youtube turned me on to star anise, and it's now my secret ingredient in beef stock. It's not something I would have thought of, but its unique flavor makes it pop.
I use it in my garam masala and for pickled eggs

I had to look that one up. "Garam masala" is now in my lexicon, lol.
Its the Indian equivalent of mixed spices.

Every family or town has their favourite version. We have s version we prefer as well. Shop bought just doesn't hack it. Last night I added it to the hummus we had and it was so good.
