What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2025)?

True, but if it is not available locally....
Then it could be one of the alternatives

I actually just thought it was for cooking for himself today
No idea about that but if I testing n tweaking the instructions for a recipe book then experimental kitchen would take a back seat and project cookbook would be all that was on my mind 😂

Could you just grind up chickpeas?
Grinding chickpeas at home is never going to achieve the same, fine texture of the commercial flour. The Indian chickpea (chana dal) is different from the Mediterranean chickpea. I always thought they were the same, but they're not. I even tracked down some Venezuelan made chickpea flour and, while it's good for dishes like socca, it doesn't have the gluey effect that Indian besan flour has.
The trial went well, though. The 1st lot was made with no flour at all - just the taro root, which is very starchy - and didn't work. The pakoras fell apart. 2nd go (top of the photo) with 2 tbsps yuca (manioc root) flour, taro, onion, coriander leaf. Fine. 3rd test (second row) with added sweet chile. Better than the 2nd. 4th attempt (bottom of the photo), added grated carrot and changed the spices. That was the version I liked the most. Taro root is a bit insipid, so the carrot brightened things up and gave a darker looking pakora.

I buy those mussels sometimes. They are very good. Surprised if they smelled bad. Its very unlikely for M&S to carry dubious produce.

I was perplexed too. I am use to make shopping at M&S Food as I love their food and they have my total trust. But not this time 😕

Prawn crackers
Dried lily
Chopped rice cake
Fermented black beans
Lemon grass
Potato starch sheets (not sure what I’m supposed to do with those!)
Salted duck eggs
XO sauce which you have to ask for because they keep it hidden behind a desk 😂

What you doin' with the dried lily?

I didn’t buy it (yet) just took a pic… but sooner or later….

I've tried those (both flavours). Of course they're awful, but if you go in with low expectations and close your eyes and pretend that they are not what they are trying to be, then they're some passable 'stodge' if you're desperate for something quick and only have time to boil a kettle of water.

If I'm going for a quick cup noodle, I prefer Pot Noodle.
