My region: the produce & dishes

Hard to see from pick, but big tail meat like lobsters but no big claw. These were quite big around 1 to 1.5 kg ea. if you bought from shop they would be approx $50 ea.

Yeah, that sounds exactly like Spiny Lobsters from the Caribbean and Mexico. They are probably a related breed.

A roadside rat seller in the north east of Thailand said she and her husband were selling 3,000 baht's worth of rodents a day after they hit on a new cooking technique.

Rather than just barbecuing the field rats Jiraporn Thipnet and her other half have started selling "Noo Naa Ob Ong" or Field Rat Baked in Earthenware Jar.

They suspend the rodents above charcoal. This creates a lovely, delicate yellow/brown flesh that is absolutely delicious.

It knocks spots off the BBQ variety that can be found on many roadside stalls in Thailand.

The couple's customers agree. Jiraporn used to sell her BBQ rats for 80-100 baht each at the stall on the Ratchasima to Kabinburi Road (Route 304) in Korat.

Now she is charging 130, 150, 180 depending on the size of the rat.

And they are turning over 3,000 baht (about £75.00) in a single day.

Did you eat that??

Russ

Probably unhealthy levels of fats and sugars but dating from a time when life in general was a little more physical overall.

It sounds rather good - whilst not being very sweet toothed I do like suet puddings occasionally.

Re the 'unhealthy' - in reality this whole pie contains only 2½ oz of suet and 5 oz of sugar. Given that the pie probably serves at least 4 to 5 this is a very small amount of suet and sugar per person. Unaccountably, the so called healthy version on the website has 8 oz butter and a 1lb sugar for the same amount of apples!!

I certainly wouldn't be worried about eating around half an ounce of suet and an ounce of sugar.
