but mayo on grilled cheese is gross
I took all that as light-hearted banter. Certainly someone as picky as I am would not seriously be so judgemental about another person's likes or dislikes. It's just like when I give SSOAP a time about peas. She has a way broader spectrum of things she will eat than I do. And Barriehie teases me about my aversion to offal. It's fine.I wouldn't say mayonnaise on grilled cheese is gross. Not my thing, but we need to respect other people's tastes. Mayonnaise is a French sauce.
Do the French eat mayonnaise with cheese?
Oh yes! And this is in French: Croque monsieur irrésistible et fondant

Outside in lieu of butter. Although I wouldn't like it inside, either, unless it had meat in it, and then over here it's considered a melt. Are we talking about mayonnaise in the cheese grilled sandwich or outside of it?
I would put it inside. I can't see grilling bread in mayo so the outside would still be butter. Are we talking about mayonnaise in the cheese grilled sandwich or outside of it?
You are not wrong. For information: in the UK grilling means putting under what in the US is termed a broiler. It can also mean cooking on a barbecue in the UK.
In the context of this discussion I am assuming we are referring to sandwiches cooked in a frying pan/skillet.
Please correct if I am wrong.
