Umm...I think I invented the panini press when I was in college (at university to you). It was an ironing board and an iron. Makes a great grilled cheese sandwich!Yeah, probably, but it's so old, they probably hadn't even invented paninis when we bought it.

My husband's stepdad likes peanut butter and bacon sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread. I am so sorry, I don't know how that's possible, and thankfully I have never seen him eating one because that would be quite difficult to watch.

Even Pippi would turn her nose up at that. She might pick off the bacon and eat it, and perhaps the peanut butter would sut her, but I bet she wouldn't like the banana mayo combination.I can see that.
Some people would argue that what most of us consider a "grilled cheese" isn't a "grilled cheese" because it's not literally grilled, or a grill isn't involved. Personally, I just think that's a semantic argument. For me, it's a lot easier to tell someone that I made a grilled cheese sandwich as opposed to "Hey, I gently griddled the outside of bread that I buttered and slowly melted the cheese on the inside on a non-stick skillet" sandwich.
I have had my creme brule torch come in handy a lot of times. That fried chicken sandwich I did last night, I melted the cheese on there with my torch.
You're right, it is oil-based, and it would help brown, but to me, the idea of warm or hot mayo isn't appealing, plus some mayo tastes "eggy," and I love that, but I don't want a hot, eggy taste on my sandwich.
The "Elvis" is weirdly very tasty. For scientific purposes, I made one at one point, and I was surprised how much I liked it. Elvis used to assemble his crew on a moment's notice to fly out of state, literally for that sandwich. He would pay thousands of dollars securing a pilot and gassing up his plane just to fly out of state to buy a 2 dollar sandwich. That is dedication!
