We need to get some fresh fruit nd bread today, am waiting for my daughter to wake up after a 3 day trip to the seashore with her class. It is a 15h sleep so far :).
Yesterday I got some good leek, made some into a leek potato carrot stew, and the rest frozen.

Mustard seed…what’s up with mustard seed?

I wanted brown or black mustard seed (never used either one before, needed for the chili challenge). I was fairly confident my local Kroger wouldn’t have that, but I thought the big Kroger might, and that the gourmet shop definitely would.

Checked local Kroger first. None. No mustard seed whatsoever, brown, black, or otherwise.

Another “regular” grocery store. Nada. Not a seed to be found. When did mustard seed get so scarce?

Gourmet shop it is…wha?…no mustard seed at all!

Last chance, big Kroger, and they had one container of mustard seed, but it was yellow. Hmmmm…

The internet said I could substitute yellow mustard seed for brown, just to use more of it, so I bought the last container of mustard seed in southwestern Ohio.

You probably need to go to an Asian store to get them (as karadekoolaid has suggested). Personally, I wouldn't substitute yellow for brown seeds. They taste very different to me. As I'm sure you have found out, yellow are much milder and to me have a very slightly cloying sweetish taste. Brown and/or black are piquant and stronger. I'd suggest dry pan roasting the yellow mustard seeds before use and adding black pepper. Just a thought...

Cayenne chilli peppers last evening. There are 24 peppers here, 400 gms for ฿52.00 (around £1.20). 14 are destined for salsa, 4 have topped up the pickle jar and 6 were chopped, vacuum packed and frozen.

In addition to 10 cases of beer, 1.25 kg prawns, a bread stick, a bunch of coriander and 10 tomatoes.

Nothing purchased today. The stores were all closed.

I wasn't 100% sure so I checked. The majority of our 7-11s open 24 hours/day every day of the year.

Our local supermarkets open every day of the year:

Big ‘C’ - 08:00 to 21:00

Lotus’s (Main) - 08:00 to 21:00 (was Tesco Lotus)
Lotus’s (Branch) - 06:00 to 21:00 (was Tesco Lotus)

Makro - 06:00 to 22:00

Tops - 08:00 to 21:00

P-Mart - 06:00 to 21:00 (frozen foods only)

When I moved here in 1999 we didn't have any supermarkets and maybe only 5 or 6, 7-11s. The first supermarket (Tesco Lotus) opened around 2002 I think.

Most convenience stores here were open, but no grocery stores, or other stores with more than a limited selection of overpriced junk food.

7-Eleven is a Japanese company now, originally founded right here in Dallas, Texas. Most of the locations near me are franchises, owned by Indians. I doubt that the corporation or the franchisees care about American only holidays. I got to know the guys at the 7-Eleven near my house. They don't make enough money to live off unless they share a cheap apartment with a few roommates. And, they work on holidays, or lose their jobs.

You have more of them than us!

I've got the following supermarkets:
Albert Heijn 08.00 to 22.00
Jumbo 07.00 to 22.00
Hoogvliet 08.00 to 21.00
Lidl 09.00 to 21.00

We only shop at the local Albert Heijn, the rest of our food comes from several national delivery chains. Mostly because the NL supermarket world is very boring, they all basically sell the same stuff and the only thing they compete on is price. For higher quality goods that are somewhat more expensive you need a delivery service or live in the big cities.
