Agree about that.Disappointed with the appetizers, unfortunately. Antipasto with just meats and cheese, no way. Where's the caponata, Nonna's eggplant, peperonata, marinated zucchini??
Anyway - Insalata mista and ziti all'arrabiata.
Just saw this now but happy birthday! Hope you had a great one!Belated birthday dinner tonight:
It came arranged around a big serving of giardiniera, so it wasn’t just meat and cheese.Disappointed with the appetizers, unfortunately. Antipasto with just meats and cheese, no way. Where's the caponata, Nonna's eggplant, peperonata, marinated zucchini??

Ah, ok!It came arranged around a big serving of giardiniera, so it wasn’t just meat and cheese.
Yeah, we do have our share of Italian descendants (Italian Americans), but I would say it's not the same as Italian immigrants because most are at least 2nd or 3rd generation. They have been conditioned to eat more meat. And a lot of patrons who are going to these Italian restaurants are not remotely Italian and most midwesterners really love their meats. Well maybe just most Americans. I used to be able to put down a full pound of steak, a baked potato, salad, and bread and still be hungry for dessert. Now granted I was young and had a very high metabolism (I weighed 110 lbs at 5'2"). But these days I eat about 4-6 ounce servings of meat or fish and focus more on vegetables. Anyway, my point is that the restaurant would likely have a lot of veggies going to waste if they did that.Ah, ok!
I'm probably culturally conditioned.
In Italian restaurants over here (we've got millions of Italian immigrants, just like you do) , when you order antipasto, the waiter comes round with a huge trolley. There will be pickled eggplants, zucchini, grilled eggplant, tomatoes, onions, fennel, giardiniera, pickled sardines, tuna salads, peperonata, olives, battered vegetable morsels, capressa, fresh mozzarella/burrata etc, etc, etc. , but never any meats;they're another thing!
And they wonder why colorectal disease is so prevalent in our country. There were two waves of immigration from Italy to Venezuela. The first was in the late 19th century (when my FIL's parents arrived from Elba) and the second was after the 2nd World War (when my BIL's dad arrived from Rome!)
I'd thoroughly agree with the meat eating. During my stay in Atlanta, they had a grill-out for my son's friends. Just meat - nothing else!
A glass of prosecco to start, along with those deviled eggs, I’d ask about the chicken pot pie having a bottom crust or not, and assuming it doesn’t, I’d look sad and order the farm burger, be happy again, and the blonde beer.
