You simply have to learn to look. And look objectively. But yeah.. I have the art school background, which helps I s'pose. I still believe most people can take good food photos if they follow a few guidelines. Plating is important too.

Quite agree.
I probably prepare 3 times as much food as MG, have taken a food plating course, and still don't have a clue.
