The CookingBites Recipe Challenge: Miso

It will be interesting to see the changes in August when we're back in the UK (albeit briefly). There's going to be a lot of eating out I think because both sets of families want to see us and on top of that that's a milestone birthday party in Blackpool (offer hopefully Lytham St Anne's but I suspect it will actually be in Blackpool). We're even risking a vegan menu on British Airways for the flights both ways. I wouldn't have done that 3 years ago that's for sure.

Its probably going to depend on where you are as some towns/cities are going to offer more vegan menus than others. Certainly, most of the big chains offer vegan options these days but that might not be where you want to eat! Here is a menu from a well known Italian style chain Zizzis and if you scroll down there is a dairy-free menu. Not a huge amount of choice but progress...

Pizza Express have a good selection of vegan pizzas and starters.

Here is a list from Blackpool: https://www.happycow.net/europe/england/blackpool/

Wagamamas was always a good place to eat in the past. Pizza Express was one were knew, using tbe one in Stockton Heath quite a lot bit I only had 1 option for each course, but could at least have 3 courses. There was a veggie restaurant in south west Manchester which we never quite made it to (we had a table booked but the M62 getting closed immediately in front of us stranded us there so were missed it) . but families don't do Wagamamas, only Pizza Express (for 1 family only) or pubs so it's going to be a challenge.

If you want cheap and cheerful, Wetherspoon Pubs do a vegan menu and there are plenty of Wetherspoons around the country.
Even more off topic, on another forum this morning:
I met an old school friend recently.
"Where are you working now?" I asked.
"I cook meals for the homeless, alcoholics, drug addicts, gamblers and the unemployed" he replied.
"You work for a charity?"
''No, Wetherspoons"

Miso caramel (try making that look good on a plate!)

Served with Scottish strawberries, vanilla infused clotted cream and shortbread biscuits.

I'm passing on this one. All the chickpea miso pastes I've seen are either in incredibly expensive and large quantities (bearing in mind that I may never have it again) or have still got some soy in them, and I cannot have soy. As someone else said earlier, it takes too long to make your own - not that I might not try at my leisure.

Describes our local Wetherspoons perfectly.
