My garden is done for the year, so as of today, I'm back to buying fresh thyme and rosemary.
As of today, my oregano and basil are dead, but I still have parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme. I’m waiting as long as possible to cut them back, because $3 for two sprigs of rosemary is painful! My garden is done for the year, so as of today, I'm back to buying fresh thyme and rosemary.

Winter prep.I'm sure I may have asked before but why cut them back?
Winter prep.
They survive better without leaves

Used to, but our winters are so up and down here, if we had a warm spell, they’d start growing again, then we’d drop back to a freeze and snow and it would kill them dead.Have you tried leaving them?
Even when I lived in Surrey, my rosemary did not always survive winter. (It was known to drop to -14C there, though they were up against the house for protection.Maybe its the climate then but I've a sage bush going strong for 20 years and long standing rosemary and thyme too (so all year round herbs). They get clipped to stop them spilling over the path but thats all. Certainly not clipped right back.
Thai chiles are fierce. I bought some last year in London, brought the seeds back and they grew. Seriously tasty, but seriously hot!
I've just been given a contact from someone in Puerto Ayacucho, our Amazon state. She sells all sorts of wierd and wonderful products, but the chiles are what interest me most. I'm planning on ordering some this week, so I'll get back!
That soil should work. My plant was outside all summer with a layer of rocks on top of the soil, to minimize evaporation, and it got 2 cups of water a week slowly and all at once.Question:
Is Miracle Grow organic potting mix for vegetables the right soil?
Or am I using the wrong pot?
I read that the soil for indoor herbs is supposed to be kept moist, but even though my soil is somewhat packed, the water drains right through it. It just takes a while.
And then of course it overflows the small base, thus the styrofoam plate underneath it.
In the time it took me to measure the pot, 6in diameter x 6in tall, all the water has drained through and the "soil" feels dry.
