What’s going on in your garden (2025)?

Well, the veg plot is planted up, seed sown such as carrots, lettuce, swede, celtuce, pak choi, kale, cabbage and so on, plus plants planted, cucumbers × 2 varieties, courgette × 2 var, squashes × 2, tomatoes × anyone's guess, and various other stuff from earlier plantings, seeds thrown haphazardly and existing perennials such as red, white and black currants, rhubarb, barberries, blueberries, pomegranate (new in last year), raspberries (tulameen plus 1 other variety), garlic, red gooseberry, perennial mint-basil, oregano and probably a few others i forgotten (self seedingwild rocket, warrigal greens spring to mind).

I've also planted lots of marigolds this year in the veg plot. Fingers crossed they help draw in pollinators.

I've got other stuff growing around in borders, pots or on trees as well ( olive, parsley, coriander, dill, fennel, rosemary, savoury, apple, pear × 2, thyme, damson, plum, prunes, apricot, lemon, lime, passionfruit, bay leaf, figs, but I'm not certain that the vine has survived to be honest. And I've likely forgotten something in amongst all of that. :D

So this is just the veg plot, under shade cloth. A summer necessity, both from the sun and the birds.

I might get around to starting veg plot media gallery album at some point in the next few days as well.

How big is your shade house?
I am planning to build one next year.

Anyway, temps have come down a bit and my yard long beans are flowering. Egg plants are starting to produce and so do the bell peppers
Limes are slowly increasing in size and the custard apple has fruit as well.
Pomegranates are almost ready. Passion fruit has finished.
Got a bit of basil (thai, lemon and Italian) and some chives. Thats about it.

I'll get a picture tomorrow. It's dark now.

But it was a simply build. The sides were already there because of the chooks, to keep them and rabbits out of the veg plot.

I bought some 2¾ inch rural water pipe, used star pickets and nuts and bolts (of a size to go through the holes in the star pickets). Then cut the poly pipe to size. Each end had 2 nuts and bolts holding the pipe to the star picket.

One of end poly pipe pieces has a 3rd star picket in the very center. I had to buy that star picket brand new, needed for the length. It holds the height up, but the poly pipe doesn't go to the ground. It starts about 1m off the ground, part way up the star picket. The length and width were controlled by the width of the shade cloth I could buy. So I joined 3 sections together. Overlapping at the poly pipe. The shade cloth is held on to the poly pipe by UV stable cable ties (i needed UV stable ones because they break each year and need replacing otherwise. )

The only area that really needs improvement is the door. At the moment it is in the side, so you have to duck under and in. But we've got an overlap in the fencing that we sometimes use instead, raspberries permitting.

I have found that a lot of veg prefers to grow inside it, but my cucumbers thrive on growing through the fencing and fruiting on the outside of the fence. The strawberries are the same.

All that really means is that in the summer, the sides of the fence get used by the veg as a climbing frame. :D

I think it is 15m by 4½m. The length of controlled by the size of wood my husband can for into his vehicle without it going into the front seat area! Lol.

Not that you'll need it, but it also acts to keep frost off my veg for longer, extending the end of my veg growing season.

I'm probably going to use the frame of 2 old safari tents.
They are about 5 x 3.5 mtr.
1 on each end and shade cloth from the one to the other.
I could get them up to 6 mtr from each other as thats the length of steel.
That should give me 5 x 13 mtr
Or 5 by about 10 without extra steel
Good point on the UV cable ties!
