The lentil (Lens culinaris or Lens esculenta) is an edible legume known for its lens-shaped seeds.

Indian pulses are usually available in three types: the whole pulse, (sabut), the split pulse with the skins on, (chilka dal) or the split pulse without the skin, (dhuli dal).

Sabut simply means "whole". Dal means "split" with or without the skin. Chilka means with skin & dhuli means without skin.

For example, split (sabut) urad beans are urad dal, split sabut masoor beans are masoor dal.

    Worth growing lentils?

I wondered if it was worth growing lentils. They are not too expensive to buy dried but I wondered if they can be grown at home and is it worth it when they are so small? I have a garden patch free of about 1 metre by 3 metres.

Recipe Puy Lentils with Salmon, Samphire and Caper butter sauce.

This recipe is inspired by the current CookingBites Recipe Challenge for which the chosen ingredient is lentils. Lentils love salty tastes (think of the well known combo of lentils with ham or bacon). But the earthy flavour of lentils also works with slightly sweet tasting fish and shellfish. So...

Legumes, Pulses, Beans, Peas and Lentils.

I have been asked what the difference between a bean, a pea and a lentil is and I have to confess I didn't really know. I just knew that they were all different and that a lentil was not a pea, just as a pea is not a bean. It was even harder explaining the difference between a legume and a...
