vegetarian

Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat (red meat, poultry, seafood, and the flesh of any other animal), and may also include abstention from by-products of animals processed for food.Vegetarianism may be adopted for various reasons. Many people object to eating meat out of respect for sentient life. Such ethical motivations have been codified under various religious beliefs, as well as animal rights advocacy. Other motivations for vegetarianism are health-related, political, environmental, cultural, aesthetic, economic, or personal preference. There are variations of the diet as well: an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products, an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, and a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs. A strict vegetarian diet – referred to as vegan – excludes all animal products, including eggs and dairy. Avoidance of animal products may require dietary supplements to prevent deficiencies such as vitamin B12 deficiency, which leads to pernicious anemia.Packaged and processed foods, such as cakes, cookies, candies, chocolate, yogurt, and marshmallows, often contain unfamiliar animal ingredients, and so may be a special concern for vegetarians due to the likelihood of such additives. Feelings among vegetarians may vary concerning these ingredients. Some vegetarians scrutinize product labels for animal-derived ingredients while others do not object to consuming cheese made with animal-derived rennet. Some vegetarians are unaware of animal-derived rennet being used in the production of cheese.Semi-vegetarian diets consist largely of vegetarian foods but may include fish or poultry, or sometimes other meats, on an infrequent basis. Those with diets containing fish or poultry may define meat only as mammalian flesh and may identify with vegetarianism. A pescetarian diet has been described as "fish but no other meat". The common-use association between such diets and vegetarianism has led vegetarian groups such as the Vegetarian Society to state that diets containing these ingredients are not vegetarian, because fish and birds are also animals.

    Vegetarian dishes

Hello all, I've been thinking about trying some vegetarian food, and I'm not sure where to start. I've tried looking in the cookbooks I own , but I can't find any dishes that are interesting and simple. Has anyone else cooked anything vegetarian? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks everyone!

    Recipe Mushroom Medley

We used to cook this quite a lot when I could have dairy. I have yet to find a suitable alternative that will work, but I thought I would post it up for others to enjoy. We first came across the recipe decades ago. I think it was in the BBC Good Food magazine or possibly the BBC Vegetarian...

    That vegetarian look

Something that I've noticed over my 35 years as a vegetarian is that people say the strangest things to you. A personal favourite was "What do you eat?" to which my response was "I try to stick to food". My other delight was being told, at a party, that I didn't look like a vegetarian. I...

    Eating around the world

I've been lucky enough to have visited more than 40 countries and one of the things that people often ask is whether I managed to find enough veggie food. Well, since I appear to be still living, the answer is probably yes. Admittedly, there are places where you have to search a bit, but most...

    Why vegetarian

To all of those out there who are vegetarians, why did you become one? Some people do it for cultural or health reasons, while others just don't like meat? If you would not mind sharing your reasons, I would love to see the answers to this as I am trying to cut down on my meat consumption.

    Organic veggie burgers, anyone

I have tried to make these and they just seem to turn out too dry. I am wondering, if there is a trick to add more moisture, while preparing these burgers. I usually do not crave the taste of beef, but after my daughter cooked up this meal today with her grass fed beef (see my other post...

How long have you been vegan/vegetarian?

My husband and I have been vegetarians for about two years now, and we're never going back. We have had such wonderful health benefits. Both of our cholesterol levels have been vastly improved. We do it not only for our health, but because we believe in animal rights. I've now gotten to the...

Is Eating Vegetarian or Vegan 100% Healthy For You During Pregnancy?

I stopped eating red meat two years ago and was only eating chicken, turkey, and fish. Then when I became pregnant my doctor told me to eat red meat in order to be healthy during my pregnancy. I was so confused because I thought eating red meat wasn't very healthy for you. So I was wondering if...

Free Vegan or Vegetarian Kindle eBooks (UK & USA)

I thought I would put together a list of free vegan and vegetarian cookery books as I find them. I also can't guarantee that they will...
