egg

An egg is the organic vessel containing the zygote in which an embryo develops until it can survive on its own, at which point the animal hatches. An egg results from fertilization of an egg cell. Most arthropods, vertebrates (excluding live-bearing mammals), and mollusks lay eggs, although some, such as scorpions, do not.
Reptile eggs, bird eggs, and monotreme eggs are laid out of water and are surrounded by a protective shell, either flexible or inflexible. Eggs laid on land or in nests are usually kept within a warm and favorable temperature range while the embryo grows. When the embryo is adequately developed it hatches, i.e., breaks out of the egg's shell. Some embryos have a temporary egg tooth they use to crack, pip, or break the eggshell or covering.
The largest recorded egg is from a whale shark and was 30 cm × 14 cm × 9 cm (11.8 in × 5.5 in × 3.5 in) in size. Whale shark eggs typically hatch within the mother. At 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) and up to 17.8 cm × 14 cm (7.0 in × 5.5 in), the ostrich egg is the largest egg of any living bird, though the extinct elephant bird and some non-avian dinosaurs laid larger eggs. The bee hummingbird produces the smallest known bird egg, which weighs half of a gram (around 0.02 oz). Some eggs laid by reptiles and most fish, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates can be even smaller.
Reproductive structures similar to the egg in other kingdoms are termed "spores," or in spermatophytes "seeds," or in gametophytes "egg cells".

    Recipe Egg 'bun'

This is a recipe inspired by an article in the Huffington post for a burger bun made from egg. Beat the egg and add salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture into a small, round, flat bottomed container (I used a small Tupperware pot) and put in the freezer. When ready, dip the frozen egg mixture in...

Looking for ideas for the recipe challenge, I came across Khai Jiao (Thai-Style Omelet) I didn't have any fish sauce in the fridge so decided to try the technique anyway. I beat one egg for a couple of minutes. Added salt and pepper. Heated a large saucepan with 3 inches on oil. Once oil was...

Recipe Bitter Gourd (Karela) Curry with Eggs

You either love them or hate them. Bitter gourds are beautifully bitter. They take bitterness to a new level. On the other hand you might think that this is the worst taste ever. I adore them - but they need to be cooked with the right companions. We all know about the 'hot, sweet, sour, salty'...

    Recipe Home-made Halloumi

Halloumi is very straightforward to make at home. Traditionally it is made with sheep’s milk but I used full fat cow’s milk instead. Here I used it grilled in a salad with crispy bacon, fried egg with tarragon and a harissa/yoghurt dressing. Based on a recipe for Halloumi in Lakeland's 'How to...

Recipe Italian (Dairy Free) Milk Pudding

Finally, here's an Italian Milk Pudding. I'm making this one dairy free. I'll stick with soya milk and I'll scale back the quantities. I won't get time to try it before the end of the challenge and is not one that's easily made vegan because it contains eggs. Good news for me mind you. The...

By crazy coincidence (after reading @morning glory's post about topsy turvy teas, I had an e-mail through about these. A particular breed of Venezuelan chicken (Cocos Pullen Mendacious) has developed a diet based almost entirely on cacao pods, and produces eggs that taste incredibly of...

Restarting Easter Traditions - Egg Decoration Competition

I was wondering if anyone was interested in a competition based around an old Easter Tradition of egg decoration? I'd put up a small prize (yet to be decided upon, but probably a small kitchen gadget or cookbook of your choosing) for the best decorated blown set of 4 eggs. (4 would allow for...

    What doesn't go with eggs?

We are very fond of our eggs on CookingBites - particularly drippy, runny fried eggs or creamy scramble. Personally I think most savoury dishes are only the better for the addition of an egg.
