vegetarian

Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat (red meat, poultry, seafood, and the flesh of any other animal), and may also include abstention from by-products of animals processed for food.Vegetarianism may be adopted for various reasons. Many people object to eating meat out of respect for sentient life. Such ethical motivations have been codified under various religious beliefs, as well as animal rights advocacy. Other motivations for vegetarianism are health-related, political, environmental, cultural, aesthetic, economic, or personal preference. There are variations of the diet as well: an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products, an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, and a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs. A strict vegetarian diet – referred to as vegan – excludes all animal products, including eggs and dairy. Avoidance of animal products may require dietary supplements to prevent deficiencies such as vitamin B12 deficiency, which leads to pernicious anemia.Packaged and processed foods, such as cakes, cookies, candies, chocolate, yogurt, and marshmallows, often contain unfamiliar animal ingredients, and so may be a special concern for vegetarians due to the likelihood of such additives. Feelings among vegetarians may vary concerning these ingredients. Some vegetarians scrutinize product labels for animal-derived ingredients while others do not object to consuming cheese made with animal-derived rennet. Some vegetarians are unaware of animal-derived rennet being used in the production of cheese.Semi-vegetarian diets consist largely of vegetarian foods but may include fish or poultry, or sometimes other meats, on an infrequent basis. Those with diets containing fish or poultry may define meat only as mammalian flesh and may identify with vegetarianism. A pescetarian diet has been described as "fish but no other meat". The common-use association between such diets and vegetarianism has led vegetarian groups such as the Vegetarian Society to state that diets containing these ingredients are not vegetarian, because fish and birds are also animals.

    Recipe Dosas

This is a Madhur Jaffrey recipe from Eastern Vegetarian Cooking. I've not yet attempted it and to be honest I'm a bit daunted! Has anyone else here made dosas? Image https://www.zoomcar.com/blog/9-dosa-joints-in-bangalore-that-have-achieved-cult-status/

    Recipe Fiery Stuffed Poblanos

Poblano peppers (fresh version of the ancho) can be as mild as a green bell or as spicy as a serrano. We also use them for Green Chili Stew and enchilada sauce. Ingredients 8 large poblano peppers 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 medium zucchini, chopped 1 small red onion...

Recipe Black Bean Chilli with Coffee

Maybe not an authentic way to make black bean chilli but the combination of coffee, soy sauce and smoky chillies provides a rich and savoury complexity of flavour. Mexican chilli sometimes does contain coffee, of course - but not soy sauce! Its easy enough to make if you use tinned black beans...

    Recipe Chilli sans Carne

Over the years I've been looking for a substitute to chilli con carne. Something vegan that tastes just as good and I have finally come up with a good pot of chilli sans carne. As a word of warning, we like it spicy, so if you don't ...halve the chilli quantity (dried and fresh). If the end...

    Recipe Vegan Cheese Fondue

Until this week I hadn't thought it possible to have a dairy free cheese fondue. All my previous attempts at a vegan cheese sauce had failed to produce anything even vaguely acceptable to both my husband and I. So I was a touch uncertain about trying a totally new recipe from a totally new...

    Considering going the vegetarian route!

Hello to all fellow Cooking Bites members! It's been a while and it feels good to be back. I hope everyone is well! I have been thinking about eliminating meat products from my diet (for the last year, roughly), for a number of reasons. The animal-cruelty aspect of things, the health side of...

    Recipe Wild Mushroom Tart

Is it cheating? I don’t know - but its a trick I’ve used before when making tarts in order to make sure the surface of the tart looks pretty. You fill the tart case with 2/3rds (or even more) of the custard mixture plus some of the filling and cook until almost set. Then add the top layer of...
