A Reminder of the "Rules" (revised May 2017)

  • You must post up the recipe here on CookingBites during the time frame of the competition (no screenshots of or links to recipes on other sites other than crediting is permitted).
  • The recipe must contain the ingredient specified in the challenge. :o_o:
  • The recipe must have the 'recipe' prefix and the 'CookingBites recipe challenge' tag. It should also have the correct normal tags so the recipe below would have the 'chicken' and 'lemons' tags at a minimum.

  • The recipe must be linked to in this thread to indicate participation in the current recipe challenge.
  • (New) Cooking the recipe is optional, though it is encouraged.
  • (New) Photographs are optional, but encouraged.
  • To include everyone in any challenge, a suitable vegetarian/vegan/allergy free/intolerance free substitution will be permitted if the challenge ingredient is something a participant can not or does not eat, for whatever reason. What is permitted is up to the current challenge judge to decide on.
  • (New) In the event that an ingredient is unavailable regionally, substitutions should be agreed with the judge.
  • The judge's decision is final and the new winner will select the next ingredient and the time frame... :scratchhead:
  • And finally, as always, in the event of a dispute the site owner has the final say.

Thank you for that SNSSO, I didn't cook it specifically for the challenge: the pictured dish was cooked a while ago. I must cook it again in the near future.

OK, I've revisited the ingredients set for the past challenges with a view to trying to find something different and come up with vinegar. Malt vinegar, distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, white wine vinegar, rice vinegar, balsamic vinegar, black fig vinegar, or any other vinegar; the list is endless.

However, the vinegar must form part of the food not just be sprinkled on your fish and chips, etc.

I thought MG would like the "free spoon".

Deadline set to midday (GMT+1) Saturday 29th July 2017

A couple of days ago I was reading about something called Frontier Vinegar Pie. There was a simple recipe posted up, and when I started to look around, I did actually establish that it is a genuine pie cooked in frontier homes in the last century. There are all sorts of recipes for it, some open pies, some closed pies, but all feature the same common ingredients - a simple pie crust, water, eggs, flour, sugar and vinegar. So I'll start the challenge off with a Frontier Vinegar Pie (or two) and update with photos shortly.

I realise now that my Greek Mushroom Stifatho also 'qualifies' for this challenge featuring 75ml of either red wine vinegar or white wine vinegar (depending on if you use red wine or white wine in the dish...) so I'll add that to the challenge as well... But sadly there will be no photos for this one because it was cooked at the beginning of the week and I don't think I took any.

Every time a challenge or spice or cook-along comes along, I pass. However, I cannot refuse @Yorky's choice of vinegar! My Dad made the best dill pickles ever. After we moved, I could not find the chicken-scratched note that was his recipe. A few summers ago, a friend came to the rescue and gave me the recipe he uses, and I played with it all that summer until I duplicated what I remember my Dad's pickles tasting like. I share with you Crock Dill Pickles.

I am hoping that someone may come up with a decent piccalalli recipe. I've had no success in the past.

So what is the purpose of the spoon with the hole? It struck me as perfect for fishing out pickled eggs.

It hasn't got a hole in it. However, I could soon cut one and then, as you say, perfect for pickled eggs.
